Carl Lewis speaks at Dinner Award

New World Track Club's annual Awards Dinner was the usual fun-filled end-of-season celebration it has been in the past. The 2001 event, however, marked the completion of New World's fifteenth outdoor track and field season. It was also made memorable by the participation of Carl Lewis.
In Columbus to promote his Carl Lewis Track & Field Festival, Lewis was awarded an honorary New World Track Club membership and a New World "polo" shirt. Lewis addressed the audience of 75, including New World members, its coaches, parents, family members, coaches from other clubs and other invited guests. Lewis' remarks to New World members emphasized education and making the right life choices. His advice to coaches and parents for motivating young people in track and field: "Make it fun. If it is not fun," Lewis said, " they won't enjoy it and won't stick with it."
Lewis recommended that coaches try kids in several different events and they will find something they like. Because he tried several events in track and field, "track (and the long jump) found me," Lewis said
